As a food focused market, it throws me off when I see crafts appear at some booths but then I remember its that time of year for gift giving and definitely thinking outside the big box stores. But like everything else on all the tables, these handmade items are still food oriented as they were grown on a farm. The market is determined not to turn into a craft fair where you see (although awesomely shiny and well-made) crafts dominating the booths over food. The mission of the non-profit market is to provide local and sustainable food to the Chattanooga area however many farmers have other seasonal items and skills that would make perfect one-size-fits-all presents.
For instance, did you know that we have three farms that make soap in three different ways? Ada’s Heritage uses goat milk. Pig Mountain/Dayspring Farms uses their pastured lard, and Circle S Farms uses their summer-grown loofa sponges with dried herbs and flowers to make these stunning sets (pictured). Sourcing locally and sustainably can reach beyond your fridge and kitchen cabinets and provide joy all year long—Did you know the market runs all year? Twelve months. Never stops.
Although the market doesn’t offer candles or crafts, there is a time and a place for heartfelt, community-minded items to be offered and shared. Maybe take a little extra time this usually stressful, holiday season and window shop with all the vendors (who are from within 100 miles of the market) as you never know what wonderful, organically created ideas and products there may arrive before Christmas.
